Real Madrid Win In Bernabeu Thriller Print E-mail
Monday, 15 September 2008 02:31

MADRID, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Promoted Numancia twice took the lead before falling 4-3 to champions Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the Primera Liga on Sunday.

The newcomers from Soria, who beat Barcelona 1-0 on the opening day of the season, took an early lead through Juan Carlos Moreno. Jose Barkero restored their advantage just after Guti had levelled for Real.

Gonzalo Higuain, Rafael van der Vaart on his league debut, and an own-goal from Domingo Cisma gave the home side what appeared to be a comfortable 4-2 halftime lead.

But Bernd Schuster's side were the ones hanging on at the end after Moreno's superb second-half free-kick had the visitors chasing an unlikely point in the closing stages.

"It was to be expected. These games after international weeks are always the hardest," Schuster said.

Much-wanted Valencia forward David Villa insists he 'would never do to Valencia what Robinho has done to Real Madrid'.

Villa was the subject of late transfer window interest from Real Madrid and the nouveau riche of Manchester City but chose to stay with Los Che, having penned a new deal on August 27 that will keep him at the Mestalla until 2014.

Madrid tried again to sign him at the 11th hour following the shock departure of forward Robinho to City but 'El Guaje' insists he could not leave his club in the lurch. He told AS: 'I would never do to Valencia what Robinho has done to Madrid, because I'm grateful to the club for everything they have done for me.

FC Barcelona started their La Liga campaign with a shock 1-0 defeat at promoted CD Numancia and champions Real Madrid CF also came unstuck away from home, losing 2-1 to RC Deportivo La Coruña.

Super Mario
After finishing a disappointing third last season, Barcelona appointed Josep Guardiola as their new coach and brought in a host of new players. However, Numancia were not overawed and took a 13th-minute lead through Mario. Barça dominated possession, especially in the second half, but could not draw level, Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi going closest for the Catalan side.

Aerial prowess
Real Madrid fell behind in the 27th minute when Mista nodded in, but were on level terms just after the break, Ruud van Nistelrooy striking in typical fashion with a clinical volley inside the area. The home side were back in front within five minutes, though, Alberto Lopo meeting a corner to score his side's second header of the night and secure the win.

Shuster: Robinho Will Stay Print E-mail
Sunday, 17 August 2008 08:23

MADRID, August 16 (Primera Liga) - Coach Bernd Schuster is convinced Robinho will stay with Real Madrid and has again insisted he sees no problem with the Brazilian's attitude despite persistent speculation that he wants to leave the Spanish giants.

Robinho's agent Wagner Ribeiro recently claimed the winger was 'very angry' with the way he feels he has been treated by Madrid and was keen to move to Chelsea, who made a formal offer for the 24-year-old - believed to be in the region of £20 million.

Madrid rejected that bid and insist Robinho is not for sale, but speculation about the Brazilian's future is still rife in Spain, with contrasting reports about his current situation.

Some reports suggest the player refused to travel to Valencia for the first leg of the Spanish Supercopa on Sunday, while others claim Robinho is ready to stay at the Bernabeu and is about to sign a new, much improved contract.

Rafael van der Vaart Completes Real Madrid Move Print E-mail
Wednesday, 06 August 2008 06:56

Rafael van der Vaart, Real Madrid's new signing, has vowed to fight for his place in the Spanish champions' team after completing his move from Hamburg.

The Holland international earlier passed his medical and signed a five-year contract at the Bernabeu, where he will join a contingent of four other Dutchmen in the Madrid squad. He will vie for a place alongside the likes of Brazil international Robinho and home-grown players Guti and Raul, but the 25-year-old is undaunted by the prospect of competition in the side.

"I will fight for a place in the team, but Madrid has many stars and if I end up on the bench that won't be a problem," he told Spanish newspaper Marca.

"Madrid has one objective this season: to win the Champions League. I can help them. The important thing is to play."

As well as being prepared to fight for a place with those already with the team, Van der Vaart claims he would also welcome Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo to the club should his transfer go through.

"It would be good if he (Ronaldo) came," he said.
