Ballack Secures Quarter Finals, Klasnic Shows Class In Croatia's Group Sweep

E-mail Print

Michael Ballack, captain of German national team secured the quarter finals for his team in Euro 2008 with a wonderful free kick versus Austria. Austria were a strong opponent but not strong enough for Hickersberger's squad which had a whole lot more at stake then already eliminated Austria.

Germany began their offensive style from the get go and saw their efforts cashing in with Michael Ballack's beautiful free kick from about 30-35 yards in the 49th minute. After taking the lead Germany defended very well and did not take many chances although Podolski and Lahm had great chances but failed to capitalize.

Croatian coach Slaven Bilic decided to start the "B" team of Croatia against Poland. According to Slaven Bilic "There are no 'a' or 'b' squads" and it turned out to be right. Croatian "B" team played as well as the "A" team and still managed to walk away with a 1:0 win from Ivan Klasnic's goal, therefore sweeping the group.

Germany will play against group a winners Portugal and Croatia will play group a runners up Turkey in the quarter finals of Euro 2008. Both matches shall be very entertaining since all four squads are known for attacking style of football.

Futbolicious prediction: Portugal vs Germany (Portugal)
